Schoolwide Incentive Program

Attendance

Attendance Incentives:

A student’s daily attendance is one of the most important ways to ensure success. It is important for students to arrive to school on time and ready to learn. To encourage students to meet attendance expectations Copper Trails has established an incentive program to recognize their achievement. Students who have perfect attendance each quarter are given a certificate of recognition accompanied by a small award. Students who have perfect attendance for the year are given a certificate of recognition accompanied by an award. Students may also qualify for quarterly incentives for positive attendance habits. In addition, each classroom has an attendance incentive chart where letters to spell out “COYOTE” are earned every day the entire class is present and on time. Once they spell out “COYOTE” the class earns an incentive.

Attendance Policies:

The Copper Trails Attendance Policies have been developed to emphasize the importance of each student being in school every day. Learning the responsibility of getting to class on time and attending all classes are an integral part of showing Coyote Character, which prepares students for success and demonstrates their commitment to learning skills beyond the classroom. In our school, instructional time is viewed as a precious resource. Consequently, we view chronic tardiness and absenteeism as a serious problem. The Copper Trails Attendance Policies are as follows:

Policy #1: All absences and tardies must be reported to the attendance line at 623-772-4101. They can also be reported to the ctattendance@chooseaesd.org email address. Leaving a message for this line or sending an email to this account are the only way to ensure your child’s absence and/or tardy is recorded correctly. Failure to contact the attendance line will result in an unverified absence and/or unexcused tardy on your child’s record. Emailing school administration and/or the child’s teacher does not excuse an absence. Doctor’s notes or documentation may be requested for reported absences.

Policy #2: If a student is not in his/her classroom when the bell rings at 8:15 am, the student is tardy. When a student has three or more tardies, he/she will be referred to the school administration for appropriate action. After 5 or more tardies within a semester, a student may serve detentions to make up for the instructional time missed. Students attending Copper Trails on a variance risk having their variance revoked due to excessive tardies or absences.

Policy #3: If a student is not on campus, the student is absent. When a student has 8 absences, regardless of the reason for the absences, parents will be notified and a truancy warning letter will be sent. Truancy warning letters are sent on the 8th and 11th absences. On the 14th absence, a truancy meeting will be scheduled with the student and the parent. Students with 18 or more absences within the school year, regardless of the reason for the absences, are considered truant and will be calculated in the school’s chronic absenteeism rate, which negatively impacts the school’s rating.

Policy #4: If your child will be absent for 5 or more days, an extended absence request form must be submitted to the front office and approved by the school principal, Mrs. Dawson, prior to the date of the extended absence.

Policy #5: Instructional minutes from 3:00 pm - 3:40 pm are protected time. Student sign-outs may not happen during this time period. Medical appointments, extracurricular activities, and travel plans should be scheduled after our school’s dismissal time.

We miss our students when they are gone and we value their contributions to our school. We would like your help ensuring that your child attends regularly and is successful in school. If you are unsure or have questions regarding these policies, please feel free to ask. Once again, thank you for your support.
